TIPS

A few tips on how to lower energy costs while keeping your space comfy.
    Summer:
  • The recommended energy efficient summer temperature is 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Set the thermostat as high as possible. For every degree you raise the thermostat setting on your air conditioner, your energy use will be reduced by 3 to 5 percent.
  • Turn the air conditioner thermostat up when you leave the house for several days or longer.
  • Don't switch your air conditioner to a colder setting when you turn it on. Constantly moving the thermostat up and down throughout the day wastes energy and money. Placing the thermostat at extremes won't cool your home faster, it only makes your system work harder.
    Winter:
  • Save around 10% a year on your heating bills by simply turning your thermostat back 10-15 degrees for 8 hours
  • Save money automatically without sacrificing comfort by installing a programmable thermostat
  • Using a programmable thermostat, you can adjust the times you turn on the heating or air-conditioning according to a pre-set schedule. As a result, you don't operate the equipment as much when you are asleep or when the house is not occupied.
  • Humidification can also help save energy. When you have proper humidity levels in your house, you can also set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter.
  • For every degree you can set your thermostat lower you can save about 3% in energy cost. So a 3 degree set back can save up to 9% in energy cost because the moisture in the air actually contains large amounts of heat and that additional heat will allow you to keep your thermostat lower, but feel just as comfortable.
    Anytime:
  • It's easy to cut your energy costs for laundry. About 80%-85% of the energy used for washing clothes is used to heat the water. You can reduce this cost by using less water by washing full loads and using cooler water and cold-water detergents - switching the temperature setting from hot to warm cuts a load's energy use in half
